A Unique View of a Lunar Eclipse

The theme of this entry is the human visual system and one of its curious abilities; contour completion. I write this in the context of a rare celestial event having happened early this morning; a full lunar eclipse on the winter solstice. As a quick recap, a lunar eclipse is when the shadow of the earth covers a portion of the moon. Since we had a full lunar eclipse last night, the entire moon was concealed behind the Earth’s shadow. It is just coincidental that it happened on the winter solstice, i.e., the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
